The Nature Of The Diseases
They Represent A Body’s Toxic Overload
A natural practitioner regards COLDS and FLU as the means by which the body strives to rid itself of a toxic overload which it cannot get rid of in any other way. It is the result of inadequate habits of eating and living, strain and tension, while at the same time getting insufficient air, outdoor exercise, rest, and sleep. Eventually, the overworked eliminative channels such as the KIDNEYS, BOWELS, SKIN, and LUNGS are unable to cope with the situation, and a desperate cleaning process is set in motion in the form of a COLD or a bout of INFLUENZA. The difference between the two is that the flu has in addition to a cold also the symptoms of a FEVER and a HEADACHE. The reaction is set off when the person is CHILLED or OVERTIRED. Mrs. White says:
“The more perfect our health, the more perfect will be our labor. When we overtax our strength, and become EXHAUSTED, we are liable to take cold, and at such times there is danger of disease assuming a dangerous form.” (3T13)

A Cold Is Nature’s Cleansing Agency
The cold is nature’s simplest and often-used CLEANSING AGENCY. It is a NATURAL ELIMINATIVE MEASURE. It is nature’s way of removing toxic wastes from the system. Wastes attract germs because the wastes are food for the germs. If the viruses had nothing to feed on they would not produce any disease symptoms. Although it is true that a cold can be transmitted by means of viruses, it is only because individuals are in a food-clogged state, and are in need of systematic cleansing. When we cleanse the body of impurities through a diet of RAW VEGETABLES, FRUITS, and their JUICES, the cause of a cold is removed. When we remove IMPURITIES we also remove GERMS, because we remove the food which they feed and multiply on. Dr. J. H. Tilden said:
“A cold is an elimination of toxins through the MUCOUS MEMBRANE.”
The COLD is responsible for more visits to the doctor than any other disease, and the HEADACHE is in 2nd place.
Virus Containing Mucous Blocks The Passages
Congestion and drainage is one of the first signs of a cold. When we take decongestant drugs, we are shrinking swollen blood vessels which decreases mucous production and makes it easier for us to breathe. But the blood flow is a part of the body’s healing process which brings white blood cells to the site to help destroy the viruses. ANTIHISTAMINES are sometimes used for a cold. What they do is to dry up the secretions and the runny nose. However, the mucous secretion from the nose is the body’s attempt to remove mucous and with it the viruses that cause the cold. Stopping this process only allows the viruses more time to increase their number. Hence, we should allow the mucous to flow freely out of the body in order to help eliminate the viruses that had a part in producing the condition in the first place. Blowing the nose gets rid of a lot of mucous. One may also use steam inhalation to which EUCALYPTUS, PEPPERMINT, or CAMPHOR have been added. This will open the passages and allow the individual to breathe.

Waste, not Viruses, are the Primary Cause Of a Cold
The person who is perfectly clean inside through healthful living will not be able to “catch” a cold. Infection can only occur when one’s body is in a toxic state. Viruses act as superficial agents, and they can only gain a foothold in the body when it is in a toxic condition. They represent SECONDARY AGENTS. They are scavengers which invade cells and live and multiply on WASTE PRODUCTS which are located there. It is the TOXIC “SOIL’ which is the real cause of the cold, for it represents to the viruses their fertile soil upon which they can propagate themselves and remain in the body unless a body cleansing process can eliminate THE TOXINS, and with them the viruses.

Drugs Stop Natures Effort At House Cleaning
DRUGS will stop nature’s effort at house cleaning, and drive the poisons back into the tissues so as to later develop other more serious diseases. Nature gives us a warning in the form MUCOUS ELIMINATION. Mucous represents the secretion of too much accumulated waste. The body also does away with the viruses by rinsing them away, by sending extra amounts of BLOOD to the diseased area, by increasing body temperature thus producing a FEVER which burns waste matter more quickly. It sends WHITE BLOOD CELLS and ANTIBODIES to the area to capture the viruses and send them out of the system. We are told that
“drug takers are never well. They are always taking cold, which causes extreme suffering, because of the poison all through their system” (4SGa 137–8).
Furthermore, normal COLD REMEDIES give only symptomatic relief.

The Mucous Membranes Become Eliminative Organs
It is said that 3 to 4 pounds of waste matter exudes through the pores of the skin of an adult every 24 hours. While the pores are closed, these exudations cannot pass through. But what causes the pores to close up? The normal temperature of the blood is said to be 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. The question now is: “What keeps the blood at this temperature when the surrounding atmosphere varies all the time?” It is accomplished largely by the PORES of the skin. When the temperature of the blood begins to rise, the pores open in order to cool the blood. When the surrounding atmosphere begins to cool, the pores close in order to keep the blood from the cold environment. After the pores have closed, the wastes can no longer pass out through the pores, and must be sent elsewhere. Some may be sent to the lungs, and some to the kidneys for elimination. But if the amount is so great that these eliminating organs cannot take care of it all, the balance is deposited in the porous tissues and cavities of the body, principally in the THROAT, BRONCHIAL TUBES, and LUNGS. Now the mucous membranes become eliminative organs.

A Cold Results When Pores Stay Closed
Mrs. White says about one lady who had limited the air in her room:
“The surface of the skin is nearly dead because she has no air to breathe. Its million little mouths are closed, because they are clogged by the impurities of the system, and for want of air. The effects produced in living in close, ill-ventilated rooms are these: The system becomes weak and unhealthy, the circulation is depressed, the blood moves sluggishly through the system because it is not purified and vitalized by the pure invigorating air of heaven. The mind becomes depressed and gloomy, while the whole system is enervated; and fevers and other acute diseases are liable to be generated. The system is peculiarly sensitive to the influence of COLD.” (1T701–3).
Open Pores With A Warm Bath
The opening of the pores can be accomplished with a WARM BATH. We are told that
“Scrupulous cleanliness is essential to both physical and mental health. Impurities are constantly being thrown off from the body through the skin. Its million of pores are quickly clogged unless kept clean by frequent bathing, and the impurities which should pass off through the skin become an additional burden to the other eliminating organs. A bath properly taken, fortifies against a cold, because it improves the circulation." (MH276).

Overeating Causes Colds
A cold is often initiated when a clogged system is suddenly shocked by a cold temperature. OVEREATING during the Christmas season causes more sickness than at any other time of the year. The liver and kidneys are overloaded. The thyroid gland comes to the rescue by helping to flush out poison through the mucous membranes, causing a runny nose. The most obvious way to remedy the situation is to relieve the strain by instituting a period of FASTING.
Why We Get A Cold Mainly In Cold Weather
The reason a cold strikes mainly in winter is because there is less opportunity for vigorous exercise. Heavy clothing blocks the pores and keeps them from breathing effectively, and develops a poor functioning skin. Lack of exercise as well as the lack of heat keeps us from sweating. There is the tendency to eat more mucous-forming foods such as starches, sweets, milk, and ice-cream, and to drink less water. The inhalation of dust, smoke, and smog. More chronic constipation. Being cold or wet. An overacid blood. Getting chilled.
“Leaving arms and limbs insufficiently protected could cause a cold, disease, and premature deaths” (2SM471).
When the skin is chilled the pores close, ELIMINATION OF WASTE MATERIAL through the skin is STOPPED. As a result so many more impurities stay within the system, and decrease the resistance of the body in general.

The Flu
The flu has two major types of viruses, namely A and B. B is the less virulent of the two. With the flu the trademark is a generally HIGH FEVER around 101° F or higher in young children. High fever is what the common cold usually lacks. Flu is also characterized by a sore throat, a dry cough, chills, weakness, loss of appetite, aching of the head, back, arms, and legs. We must make drastic changes in our diet in order to escape the effect of the flu virus.
The herbs CAYENNE, GARLIC, GINGER, and THYME are antioxidants which are high in sulfur and copper. They help to reduce the severity of the flu.
How A Cold Can Be Cured
Is A Cold Curable?
Orthodox doctors say that a cold is incurable. If you take medicine for it, it will last about a week. If you take nothing for it, it will last about 7 days. There is no cure for the common cold, for the cold itself is the cure. The cold is cleansing the body to put it back into a healthy state. If you use drugs to treat the cold, it would be a suppressive method of treatment. Hygienists say that they have many cures for a cold. The development of a cold after exposure is determined to a large extent by the state of health of a person. If the body of a person is relatively internally clean, then for a cold he may experience nothing more than a sore throat. But if the pores of the skin are closed for extended periods he may get the FLU or even PNEUMONIA, and all this happens because the pores closed in order to protect the bloodstream.
The Use Of Herbs
One doctor made a brew of teaspoon of CAYENNE PEPPER, the juice of one LEMON, one minced clove of GARLIC, and 1 gm of vitamin C to be sipped slowly as his recipe for a cold.

A person from Alaska said:
“When our children get runny noses, coughs, nosebleeds, or just colds in general, I make GARLIC TEA and give it to them quite hot. The next day they have no stopped-up heads. This is also good for SINUS HEADACHES. I then repeat this every hour for sinus trouble or pneumonia. Smashed GARLIC in the vaporizer has proved successful for both chest and head congestion for children and adults as well.”
A lady from New York said:
“I awoke one morning with a fever. One gland in my neck was swollen, and my throat was so sore I could hardly swallow. I started taking GARLIC CAPSULES, three of them three times a day. By the next morning, the fever was gone, the gland was no longer swollen, and my sore throat was completely gone. Since then my children have used garlic in treatment of various virus or cold symptoms with excellent results, usually clearing problems within a day or two.”
GARLIC OIL combined with ONION JUICE, diluted with water and drunk several times a day, is effective against FLU, SORE THROAT, and RHINITIS.
For a sore throat—CAYENNE PEPPER;
To increase sweating— BLUE VERVAIN TEA;
For chest colds—SMARTWEED boiled in water and used in fomentations;
For a cough—HOREHOUND TEA;
For a fever—SAGE TEA.;
For enhancing the immune system— ECHINACEA, HOREHOUND, GOLDENSEAL, ROSEHIPS, PEPPERMINT, and CHAMOMILE teas.
HOT FOOT BATH—increases the blood flow from the feet to the entire skin surface. It promotes decongestion in the head, chest, and is used to treat headaches.

Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy will combat the unpleasant stuffiness that inevitably accompanies a cold. Add 3 drops of EUCALYPTUS, PINE, CLOVE, or THYME OIL to one quart of hot water. Hold a towel over your head to create a tent over the vapor and inhale for 10 minutes. Repeat as often as 3 times a day. A common vaporizer will do the trick also.
Thyme oil is 8 times stronger than PHENOL in its antiseptic action, and will not damage tissues as phenol does.

The Treatment Of A Cold And Flu
Stay in bed and keep warm
FAST; consume no solid foods until the fever is gone
Take large doses of VITAMIN C, preferably in natural form. Doses of 500 mg to 1000 mg every hour will rapidly neutralize bacterial or viral toxins, and will bring the fever down within hours. Vitamin C has only a small value against colds in small amounts. The amount of protection increases with increased amounts, and becomes almost complete with 4 to 10 gm per day. If you increase your intake 10 fold, the concentration in the blood will become 10 times as great.
Induce perspiration by drinking warm drinks made of CITRUS JUICES sweetened with honey.
Take hot BATHS.
Don’t take fever suppressing drugs such as ASPIRIN. Aspirin has been shown to increase the number of viruses; to lower the body’s production of INTERFERON, and to stop vitamin C from getting into the white blood cells which fight infection.
How To Prevent A Cold
Cod Liver Oil
During a cold VITAMIN A levels in the body drop. This is a sign that vitamin A is used up at a faster rate. Mothers throughout the world have known that a daily spoonful of COD LIVER OIL, a rich source of vitamins A and D prevents colds. Vitamin A or beta-carotene has demonstrated significant immune enhancing action. Originally known as the “anti-infective” vitamin, it plays an essential role in maintaining the integrity of the lining of the respiratory tract and its secretions. It also demonstrates a potent virus killing activity.

Diet
Dr. Pauling said:
“I believe that most colds can be prevented or largely ameliorated by control of the diet without the use of any drugs.”
Mrs. White says:
“I wish we were all HEALTH REFORMERS. I am opposed to the use of pastries. These mixtures are unhealthful; no one can have good digestive powers and a clear brain who will eat largely of sweet cookies and cream cake and all kinds of pies, and partake of a variety of food at one meal. When we do this and then take cold, the whole system is so clogged and enfeebled that it has no power of resistance, no strength to combat disease.” (CD334).

Vitamin C
A dose of 100 to 1000 mg of vitamin C per day is recommended to prevent getting a cold. This enhances the WHITE BLOOD CELL production, increases INTERFERON levels, and increases the integrity of the CONNECTIVE TISSUE.
Dr. Ritzel made a study of school boys taking 1000 mg of VITAMIN C daily. He reported a decrease in the number of colds by 45%, and a decrease in the number of days of illness by 30%.
Dr. Pauling’s studies indicate that individuals taking 70 to 200 mg of vitamin C daily averaged a decrease in illness per person of 31%, in comparison with PLACEBO SUBJECTS. Those taking more than 200 mg averaged 40% less illness.
Fresh Fruits And Vegetables
More fresh fruits and vegetables and their juices should be eaten during the winter months to prevent a cold from coming on. More attention must be paid to keeping the body clean, since normal conditions of cold, lack of exercise, lack of swimming, and heavy clothing, have more of an influence upon our bodily condition, so as to make it less likely for a cleansing action to be brought about.
